Finding staff - and keeping them.

1. Specific rather than general

   Describe the real daily routine in the job advert: area, length of rounds, working hours, weekend shifts, vehicle and induction. Specific information builds trust.

2. Respond quickly

   Respond to applications on the same day if possible. A short phone call often does more than a long email. Keep the application process simple - a CV is enough for the first contact.

3. Involve your own team

   Your employees know good colleagues. Actively ask for referrals and invite interested people to meet you or join a trial round.

4. Plan the induction

   A written induction plan with fixed contact persons, accompanied rounds and feedback talks gives new staff confidence. It also belongs in your QM manual.

5. Keep an eye on the skilled staff ratio and qualifications

   Regularly check which qualifications your rounds really need. In NRW, the agreements under § 132a SGB V set out which medical care services may be provided by which staff. For service groups 1 and 2, there are recognised further training courses for care assistants.

6. Nurses from abroad

   Foreign qualifications are recognised under § 40 of the Nursing Professions Act, often with an adaptation course or a knowledge test. During the recognition procedure, employment under § 16d of the Residence Act is possible. Plan time for this and a fixed companion in the team.

7. Get funding for further training

   The employment agency can fund further training of employees under § 82 SGB III. Whether and to what extent is decided case by case - talk to the employer service early.

8. Bridge staff shortages

   If things get tight at short notice, temporary staff can help secure care until a position is filled again.
